How did you become a Ron Perlman fan?

Postby Ronsfav on Sat Nov 06, 2010 10:59 pm

Hi everyone! It's fun to hear people talk about the character that they most think about when it comes to Ron Perlman. Some guys know him because of Hellboy or Clay on Sons of Anarchy etc. Some women have loved him for years because of Vincent in Beauty & the Beast.

I thought it would be interesting to hear how you became a Ron Perlman fan. Take a minute and tell your story.

Here's mine...

I LOVED BATB when it was on in the 80's. Never really knew who the actor was behind beautiful Vincent at that time but loved, loved, LOVED Vincent. Then a few years ago, I was shopping with my daughter and she wanted to go into a video/music store. While I was waiting for her I just started wandering around and stumbled over the DVD's for BATB. I was so excited I bought them on the spot. I spent every spare second I had watching all 3 seasons and falling in love once again with Vincent but this time I wanted to know the man behind the mask.

The internet was such a rich source of information for me. I just started following my nose and finding out more about Ron as an actor and a person. I've loved spending time in his unofficial website http://www.perlmanpages.com To my delight I found out he'd been in another tv series and went out and bought the complete boxed set of Magnificent 7 (I seriously love Josiah...even more so in fanfic version). Then low and behold I later find out he's in SOA (missed the whole first year but found out about it 1 day before season 1 came out on DVD). Then I picked up Hellboy & Hellboy 2 and the love affair continued.

I've since watched the Trial of Old Drum & a few of his other movies. Many movies I haven't seen. I recently watched The Job and I hated it...even though Ron was in it. I really hate being scared and I hate horror so there are some things I won't be seeing (not even for Ron). Then this summer I travelled to Toronto to the Toronto International Film Festival and got to meet him in person. I must say, he didn't disappoint. If you're interested, you can check out the adventure on the perlmanpages here: http://www.perlmanpages.com/bsmovies%20interviews%20etc/pattimeetsron.htm

That's my story...what's yours???

How fun!!!!! Wow! What a lot of questions I have of you HM! Would you indulge me??

I have seen you floating in and out of my Ronaholism (not sure of the spelling there) research. But even after reading your wonderful story I'm still confused how you fit into everything. So...here's my questions:

- The research you're referring to, was that for the fanfics that you write? Or is that for something else?
- Are you the person who went with Pat to the Hellboy set?
- Where can we find your stories? Perhaps you could put some links on the Fanfiction Topic area?
- Is Hellmistress your pen name?
- So am I correct in understanding that you write the movie reviews on perlmanpages?

As you can see, I'm cursed with a curious mind. ;) I'm looking forward to getting to know you better :)

1. I did the research firstly for the background to PRIMAL FORCE & the review I did on PP. It's thanks to Pat and writing for PP that I got to meet Ron, meet G and ultimately to meet Doug in person, although we had already met on the HELLBOY message boards. We all got together at the first HELLEBRATION back in 2004.

2. Yup, that's me! Dougie fixed it for us to go onto the set, and we had a BLAST. I did write every day on the DTF message boards from Budapest, but we lost the posts a couple of years ago.

3. All of my stories are on MASKS, at http://mizhelenuk.topcities.com

4. Hellmistress is the name I landed with when I joined the original HELLBOY message boards back in 2003. I tried to use Mizhelenuk on the forum, but it wouldn't accept it, and HELLMISTRESS was the one it suggested. Guillermo shortened it to HM and I've been HM ever since! I tend to use Hellmistress on all forums now as a way to keep continuity and not confuse people! :D

5. Yes, I wrote some of the reviews on PP. Bless her, Pat took me under her wing to keep me out of trouble, and the rest, as they say, is history.

And wonderful reviews they were too, Helen. They definitely enriched the PP website. :D

As for how I became a Ron Perlman fan? It was back in 1988, when a new TV series hit our screens on Fridays at 8PM. A modern day version of the classic fairy tale, "Beauty and the Beast." My youngest daughter and I scoffed at the advert for it, how on earth could they make this work? It would probably be rubbish! But we watched the pilot episode anyway, and from that very first night I was hooked! I adored the whole premise of the show with it's close-knit Tunnel community and the values they stood for. I adored the idea of the inextricable bond that Vincent and Catherine shared. But most of all, I adored the character of Vincent, and all the wonderful qualities he embodied. And that led me to thinking about the incredible talent of the actor who played this role, the man behind the mask, who brought this amazing character to life. I was certain it must be a well-known actor, a name I would recognise immediately, but when I checked the listings in my TV mag - Ron Perlman? Who? Never heard of him! That seems so strange to me now, 22 years later, because that name has become as familiar as my own. :)
I was luckier than many others who also loved this series, because the following year in 1989 I discovered the UK Network for the 'Beauty and the Beast' fandom very soon after it was formed, so I was involved right from the beginning more or less. It was the first time in my life I had ever been involved in any type of fandom, as nothing had really interested me strongly enough to want to be a part of one until then, and what a blessing it was! Let's remember here that this was in the days before home computers and internet access, etc, so it was extremely difficult to find information on a virtually unknown actor, especially when you lived outside the USA. But suddenly, through this fandom there were photos - videos - fanzines - and conventions!

(to be continued as I've run out of space) ;)

Part two (For some reason I wasn't able to get any more into part one!)

The BATB conventions we attended over the years, both here in the UK and over in the USA, were such fun! We had some marvellous times, and got to meet so many of the stars of the show. Through the fandom and the conventions I also began to discover so much more about this actor I'd come to admire and respect so much. But there was also a lot of frustration in those earlier years too, because we just kept wondering when Ron was going to receive more roles that were worthy of his talents. Thanks to directors like Jean-Jacques Annaud, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and most of all, Guillermo del Toro, Ron has been given those roles, and he shone like the star that he is in all of them. I should also add sincere thanks to Kurt Sutter for giving us Clay in "Sons of Anarchy," and the opportunity to watch Ron on our tv screens for 13 weeks each year! :D

Anyway, I've gone on long enough. That's how I became a Ron Perlman fan, and the reason I've remained a staunch fan all these years (and will go on doing so) is because of the amazing talent of the actor, and graciousness of the man.

Welcome to the new forum, Gannygirl! So glad you found us. :)

Have you seen many of Ron's other projects too, or is it only the character of Vincent that interests you?
