Hellboy

I really think we should have Hellboy here too, after all this character turned Ron into a Super Hero!

'Hellboy' versus 'Hellboy II' - which is your favourite? Do you think one was better than the other, or do you love them both equally?

I have asked myself that a hundred times and still can't settle on an answer.

What I love about HB1:
- I love when he's working out with the barbells when being introduced to Myers
- I love when he hides his cigar behind his back from Father
- I love when he get mad that Myers helped him do "his job" by shooting that monster
- I love when he stole the beer with his tail and then goes and sees Liz
- I love when he's writing the drafts of "Dear Liz" and then tries to hide them with his feet when she comes in his room
- I love when he follows Liz & Myers on their coffee date
- I love when Brother Blue was taking that thing out of his arm and the "Never even bought me a drink" line
- I love in that same scene when Father was trying to make a point about him "not being around forever" and HB (absorbed in his own childlike little world) misses the point completely

What I love about HB2:
- I love that Liz is more mature and self assured
- I love when he lets the cats out from under his bed "You can come out now...it's ok"
- I love when Manning was trying to convince him to be "discreet" and he wrangles more cigars out of him
- I love when he's trying to talk to LIz over the walkie talkie thing and figure out why she's mad at him
- I love the Prince & Princess
- I love the shower scene while he's drinking the beer
- I love when he's in the change room and Yohan mops the floor with him
- I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the scene after he gets his cheek cut open when someone threw something at him and Liz is trying to clean the wound and he keeps wincing even when she hasn't touched it yet...then he gets this sweet childlike look on his face when she says "You did good out there". I love that scene the best. The look on his face is so amazing.
- I love (obviously) the Barry Manilow scene because it is just so adorable
- I love the scene when he has those special glasses on and that creature is about to eat the cat and he just can't stand by and watch that happen
- I love the beautiful colors
- I love when the Prince had just killed his father and the beautiful rich color and the leaves falling etc. Very rich visually
- I love more things but that's all the time I have :P

Yes, I'm in total agreement with all the above, plus a couple more:
- The funeral scene where HB is standing above looking down on it all with the rain pouring down on him.
- The scene at the end where Hellboy brings Liz back to life, and when she asks what he'd whispered, I can't remember the exact wording but he says something like "I said, hey you over there, let her go, because for her, I'll cross over - and then you'll be sorry!" I just loved that!

Oh, and one more - again towards the end, when Myers says, "will you be okay?" and HB replies "How big can it be?"

I'll have to do HB2 later.

Of course, every incident of "Oh Crap!"

Has anybody bought the Director's Cut of Hellboy? Ron mentioned in one interview that it is 17 minutes longer than the original. I was just wondering if there was also some more special features or commentaries that weren't in the regular version of Hellboy.

Yes, I have both, and there is a difference, because the normal dvd consists of 2 discs, while the Director's cut has 3. Here's the list of extras on disc 3.

● Video Introduction by Ron Perlman
● Cast video commentary with Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Jeffrey Tambor & Rupert Evans.
● Production workshops.
● Makeup and lighting tests.
● Q&A Archive: Comic Con 2002.
● A quick guide to understanding comics by Scott McCloud.
● Director's Notebook.
● Photo Galleries.
● Mike Mignola Pre-Production Art.
●Conceptual Art Galleries.
● Comic Book Artists Pin-Ups.

Hope this helps?

Pat, It's going to cost about $60 for me to buy it (when I already have the original Hellboy). As a Ron Perlman fan, do you feel it's worth the investment?

Ouch! That's pretty expensive, isn't it? Maybe you should try Ebay first, and see if it comes up there any cheaper? Too be honest, I haven't watched that 3rd disc in quite a long while, and my memory isn't what it was, so maybe I should watch it again, to remind myself exactly what's on it before I answer your question, Patti.

I can't understand why it's so expensive over there in the US. I just found it on a UK website for £3.89!! Look!

Unfortunately, it's Region 2.

If I were you, I'd keep shopping around. It's different if you didn't have the movie at all, but $60 just for a 3rd disc, is a heck of a lot of money!

Just editing this post to add an extra bit, because I just checked out amazon.com and found the director's cut selling from $7.42. Here's the link.

I'm a little leary about that because I did exactly that about 6 months ago (paid on amazon $10 for the "director's cut" version of Hellboy and was delivered the normal version...the exact one I already own).

For $10 it wasn't worth the hassel and the expense to ship it back but I certainly don't want 3 copies of the original Hellboy :)

I'll wait to make a decision.
