05-Jun-2007 - GDT Announces Hellboy 2 Cast
by Parker Lyons

GDT stopped by our message boards to reveal the casting choices for Hellboy 2. Here is what he had to say:

John Hurt is back for a cameo.
Myers is not back (see Rupie in KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN in the London stage!!).
Universal has NOT authorized a brief Kroenen cameo/ epilogue- yet.
Johann will be played by John Alexander (body) and Tomas Kretschmann (voice).
Dougie will play 4 characters.
Brian Steele will play 4 characters.
Anna Walton is the actress playing Princess Nuala.
Luke Goss plays Prince Nuada. Silverlance.
Roy Dotrice plays King Balor
He went on to add that "The names of the characters come from the Tuatha Dé Danann but their function and characteristics in the film (the characters being of Elvish lineage) is completely different."

Here is some background on the actors listed above:

John Hurt (Professor Bruttenholm)
No bio necessary - Hurt is a two time Academy Award winner and will obviously return for his role as the Professor, Hellboy's adoptive father. Since Broom was killed by Kroenen in the first film, it remains to be seen how he will return for his cameo role in H2

John Alexander (Johann body)
I am assuming this is the same John Alexander who played Mighty Joe Young in the 1998 remake and various other costumed roles (mostly gorillas!). Looks like he has had a career quite similar to Doug Jones, and this might be his biggest role to date. Can't wait to see what he can do.

Tomas Kretschmann (Johann voice)
Kretschmann is an actor of East German descent, which makes him an authentic choice to voice Johann. Kretschmann has had some fairly high profile roles, most recently Captain Engelhorn in Peter Jackson's King Kong, and Captain Wilm Hosenfeld in The Pianist. GDT has also confirmed that Kretschmann will not appear as Johann in the film, as Johann's past would be saved for a potential third movie.

Doug Jones
Doug, as we all know, is a GDT favorite. This time around he will be playing four roles:

Abe Sapien (with his own voice!)

The Chamberlain - the doorkeeper for the King of the alternate world

The Angel of Death - a FEMALE character, believe it or not!

A Wizard - Unscripted right now. Don't know much about this one, stay tuned

Brian Steele
Another GDT mainstay. You may remember Brian for his performance as Samael in the first Hellboy. Here are the characters he will play:

Troll
Mr Wink
Map Shop Owner
Fragglewump

Anna Walton (Princess Nuala)
Anna will be playing a princess of the alternate world, and quite possibly, a love interest for Abe. She is a new name to most of us, but looks like she will also be starring in The Mutant Chronicles in 2008, which also stars Ron Perlman.

Luke Goss (Prince Nuada)
Goss reunites with GDT for the first time since he played Nomak in Blade 2. In Hellboy 2, Goss will play Prince Nuada, the main villain of the film. Nuada is "a ruthless leader who treads the world above and the one below, defying his bloodline to awaken an unstoppable army of creatures."

Roy Dotrice (King Balor)
Dotrice, 84, is a Tony Award winning actor (A Moon for the Misbegotten, 2000) who has often played the "disapproving father" role. He did it to perfection in 1984's Amadeus. Could he do it again as the father for the evil Prince Nuada? Only time will tell. Dotrice's work has largely been in television, with a wide range of shows from Angel, to Murder She Wrote.

Filming starts this Friday, June 8 in Budapest.
